It was the first Herzog film I ever saw (because I'm a huge fan of Willem Dafoe and Michael Shannon) and I actually didn't like it that much when I first saw it. I was only about a year or so back that I rewatched it and just loved it. I think it's maybe just because I've seen more films and I get more what it was going for, tonally, than I did the first time. It was also a hell of a lot funnier than the first time as well. A great pic. maskofgojirahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18305737005899440472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-43454006086812267592013-09-06T14:29:47.626-04:002013-09-06T14:29:47.626-04:00It's so good and crazy. Really shows me ...This is a really great list Alex! Really shows me how much I'm missing out on from Herzog. I really haven't seen too many of his feature films, the fictional ones I mean, but I'm a huge fan of his documentaries. I love Grizzly Man, Into The Abyss, Encounters at the End of the World, and Little Dieter Needs to Fly; I would say watching films like those have really raised my demands of what a documentary needs to bring to the table in order to impress me. His docs are really the only ones within that "genre(?)" that I can say have truly touched me.
I really need to see more of his fictional work though, I love The Bad Lieutenant, and have a lot of respect for films like Rescue Dawn, MSMSWHYD, and The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser but it appears as though I have yet to even scratch the surface of his best work. Thanks for all the great recommendations! maskofgojirahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18305737005899440472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-1098177414747990612013-09-05T22:44:30.726-04:002013-09-05T22:44:30.726-04:00Love your praise for Into the Abyss. The film's so reflective of Herzog's personality while still managing to tell a heartbreaking story. He deftly navigates a serious issue without trivializing its human impact.

Probably a minority opinion, but I think Herzog (a) has gotten better with age and (b) is arguably a better documentary filmmaker. Even so, I respect him immensely for the empathy he has for his characters be they real life people or fictional creations.

Here's my top 10:

1. Into the Abyss
2.
