I think he actually has one of the most distinct styles of any living filmmaker. But the problem I have with a lot of his films is that they are yes, overlong, and almost too stylish. I do really love many of his films (including Minority Report, and, to a somewhat lesser degree, Munich - so definitely check those out), but he's a hit and miss filmmaker for me. Artificial Intelligence, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Catch Me If You Can, Hook, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds (best to worst). What I like about Spielberg is that he have an eye for making visual great films, the score is always good to great, many fantastic performance in his films and great screenplays with interesting stories. He can make a good solid film that stood out for its realism and honesty.
Now Spielberg is a good director? In my opinion, NO. Why? His films are usually good and sometimes great, but the think I hate about Spielberg is that he doesn't have a style of film making. No trademarks, no recurring techniques, practical I think any one can make his film. And I'd preferred to someone else to direct his scripts. Okey some of his films are good, fantastic. But some are just long boring films that I don't like so much that could be shorter and better. Films that I'll never say bad things about them: Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Raiders of the Lost Ark is good but its more like a homage to B-movie genre; Close Encounters of the Third Kind (too long), Jurassic Park (great film with better scenes than film itself), E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (too childish) are fantastic sci-fi films (sci-fi being my favorite genre) that I don't enjoy so much but I appreciated a lot better when I was younger; Catch Me If You Can is very, very good and DiCaprio (I hate when he close his mouth) is good, for the most part, and Tom Hanks is good, but not great; Hook is long and childish but same is Peter Pan, Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman do a great job and there are some great moments and scenes (is the only of Spielberg's films that I own the Dvd), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds are bad and pointless very bad films that I think I'll never ever watch again; (I erased from my memory War Horse like in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). I might check out Empire of the Sun, Amistad, Minority Report, The Terminal and Munich.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00059813680559966539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-30568529338851557592015-01-28T11:46:29.990-05:002015-01-28T11:46:29.990-05:00Man, it's so weird to go back and revisit some...Man, it's so weird to go back and revisit some of these older posts. Today, I'm much more lenient on the Indiana Jones films. I still don't think they're great, but I see the appeal. E.T. will always be tops for me. That flick was such a staple of my childhood.Alex Withrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15887018476048271594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-30907228423301358852015-01-28T03:06:51.463-05:002015-01-28T03:06:51.463-05:00I'm as much away from the crowd on Spielberg i...I'm as much away from the crowd on Spielberg in general as you are about the Indiana Jones films specifically (I do like some of them more then you, but only in that they're fun. Great cinema? Definitely not.).

I'm mostly okay with your rankings - probably higher on Empire Of The Sun, lower on Jurassic Park, and the one that would get me in trouble if I discussed it too often, E.T. much lower. I should be the prime person for that one - love great films, saw it in the theater when I was a kid, etc. But I just can't get there. It just sort of feels hokey at this point.TheHistorianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07255156966606278419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-16162261280081088922014-02-16T20:57:44.749-05:002014-02-16T20:57:44.749-05:00Such a great film, isn't it?
