In fact, I would challenge your top 5 picks, especially Into the Wild, with his performance in Second Best. He is almost unrecognizable as "the Leading Man of the 80s" in his role as a painfully awkward single guy looking to adopt a troubled boy. His performance is IMHO one of THE best performances on film. End Game was another movie where I thought Hurt's work was truly remarkable. I also loved him in Loved. The movie as a whole could've been done better, but I was impressed with the character Hurt created - a deep, complex lawyer prosecuting a mentally abusive former lover of Robin Wright. I liked Maddened by His Absence, but I have to say it's a hard film to watch. I also loved him in Jane Eyre. I honestly didn't think I would since I think the version with Orson Wells is the best. I still think the Orson Wells' version is the best, but I love what William Hurt brought to the role. I'm actually surprised that Hurt isn't in more comedies because I think he's really got a talent for timing and delivery, as well as facial expressions. That said, A Couch in New York and Late Bloomers were both disappointments, and so was Silent Witness. All three had a lot of potential to be really great, with better dialog and better direction. If you are a true fan, you will check out another hard film to watch: Until the End of the World. It's good because Hurt's in it. The Plague, Contaminated Man, and The Countess are not good, even with Hurt, but if you're really a fan you'll watch them anyway... I did. lolAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14459124313806836010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-56966118410021291372015-09-21T11:58:22.522-04:002015-09-21T11:58:22.522-04:00Thanks! Fabulous.

In regards to Hurt's career, I always got the impression from interviews that he made it big, made his money, and then decided he could afford to be choosy with only taking roles that truly interest him, which I assume is why things like Dark City and Humans happened. He did a great interview for Humans where he talks about identifying as a stage actor and a character actor first and foremost, and not wanting to tackle a role unless it's both a new and interesting challenge but also something that he feels like he's completely suited for.
A++ great actor.Zoihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10844935658003510036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-29338120996012773702015-05-01T13:31:21.470-04:002015-05-01T13:31:21.470-04:00I've seen most of those, but Nightmares and Dr...I've seen most of those, but Nightmares and Dreamscapes sounds very interesting. Rare...You know what I don't see anywhere here? Rare Birds, a quirky little romantic comedy that is just too cute for words. You can't call yourself a fan without seeing that one. Another aspect of his work that shouldn't be ignored is his many TV roles. A piece of work that is a big standout is his role as Jason Renshaw in Battleground, Episode 1 of Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes. It's a short film (just 60 minutes) done entirely without dialog, and its done so well that you don't even need it or miss it. Check out Too Big To Fail, The Challenger Disaster, Damages, The Host, Frankenstein, Moby Dick... all are really strong performances. I would even recommend you check out Shrink Wrap, Season 4 Episode 25 of King of Queens, which I thought was really funny.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-74939350765180099272013-05-06T11:07:13.516-04:002013-05-06T11:07:13.516-04:00Glad to hear you're a Hurt fan. Hurt was amazing alongside Hunter & Brooks. I still have to gather my thoughts a bit but I'm going to try to wrap my head around it a bit more when I write about The Last Emperor later this month. I looked back at your "If I Chose the Best Pictures" post and totally agree that it should have won over Emperor.
