I hadn't seen Once Upon a Time in Anatolia or The Turin Horse when I wrote this, but I'm sure they would've been in the running. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, in particular, is one I want to revisit soon. 2011 was such a great year.Alex Withrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15887018476048271594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-59847982919366035072019-01-30T05:56:46.351-05:002019-01-30T05:56:46.351-05:00Its funny, I'm reading back through these for ...Its funny, I'm reading back through these for reccomendations given I've started drafting a top ten of the decade this month and your taste is so on point. That being said, two films riding right at the top of my list right now, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia and The Turin Horse, are no-where to be found here HAHA Different strokes indeed. I've been reading about it and I can't think of any other way we went from The Godfather to Ghostbusters in just 12 short years. 80s was crappy for American movies sure- but international cinema? I really feel like 2011 is one of the most egregious instances of the Academy dropping the ball. The nominees by and large are a very poor representation of that year in film. That is until I saw Shame. Flawless masterpiece that I not only would've nominated and awarded for Best Actor, but nominated it across the board: Best Director, Screenplay, Supporting Actress (Carey Mulligan), Editing, Score, and Cinematography. That film, along with plenty of the other films on your list, like Drive, and Melancholia, We Need To Talk About Kevin, deserved to be on the Best Picture lineup more than a good chunk of the films that were actually on there (*Cough* The Help*cough*Extremely Loud*cough*).
