This is so kind and it really means a lot to me. Eyes Wide Shut is a movie I can watch endlessly. There are so many different reads to put on it; it's like a 2.5 hour cinematic enigma. I adore it. Thank you again for such a great comment!Alex Withrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15887018476048271594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-44778816198994877482023-07-27T18:00:00.469-04:002023-07-27T18:00:00.469-04:00I recently found your blog and we must be right ar...I recently found your blog and we must be right around the same age because all of these movies are dear to me and I saw most of them in the theater. I remember seeing Magnolia, Fight Club and Eyes Wide Shut on back to back weekends when my wife was pregnant with my son. It’s insane that he was almost conditioned in utero to love these exact same movies. We talk endlessly about Eyes Wide Shuts greatness. We have poured over details of the position and the precision of how Stanley Kubrick used the Christmas lights in this film. When I watched it in the theater, I remember thinking to myself “how is this guy out classing and lapping everyone at 75 years old and still doing things that no one has ever attempted or had the imagination to even consider”. I love the film but I love what it means to me even more. Discovering your blog and reading about these films, Eyes Wide Shut in particular, really did that thing that nostalgia does to our memory. It makes you wonder why you ever left that moment in the first place. Thank you again for doing that for me and reminding me about that movie, that moment, and how a film can shape the world our memories live in. My memories of my son will always be like that feeling I get when I find myself surrounded by Christmas lights. Lights that always seem like they were placed with thought and precision, with careful consideration right there in that exact moment, curated just for me to gift that memory. And to remind me how the life I have is beyond my wildest dreams because I get to be the only person my son calls Dad. Thank you for your thoughtful commentary that took me to the place I sometimes stumble into briefly but have no intention of leaving once I do because I’m happiest there surrounded by those lights. Here's my review: https://www.andsoitbeginsfilms.com/2014/10/nightcrawler.html

I also recorded a podcast on Heat last year, with WAY more cool info, if you're interested: https://waywpodcast.buzzsprout.com/1176041/10560113-57-heat-1995Alex Withrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15887018476048271594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-91238997303639324462023-02-27T21:05:25.396-05:002023-02-27T21:05:25.396-05:00Hi Alex! Just discovered your blog looking for som...Hi Alex! Just discovered your blog looking for someone else who loved Heat as much as I do! I absolutely ADORE your write up! I'm from the southeast side of the US and have only been to LA once, just after coincidently seeing Heat for the first time. When I was able to take in the sights after obsessively looking up where Heat was filmed wad so breathtaking. The only other movie that has stayed with me the way Heat has was "Nightcrawler" starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Just something about that film speaks to me the way Heat does. I guess because they both deal with the criminal element of LA in one way or another. If you haven't seen Nightcrawler, I humbly suggest you give it a viewing. It is a bit slow but you seem like a patient filmviewer and you may enjoy it. If you have seen it/ever watch it, even if you hate it, please give me your thoughts as I really do respect your opinion on films, even just after reading this one post.
If you could do me one other favor -
Do you know why McCauley tells the bank manager guy who plays dumb - "what key?" - after he hits him, "sit there, don't move. Let it bleed."? I could never figure out if it was like a message of "Look dude, I am in control here, you need to understand that, NOW" or if it was like "OK, now you understand we're not playing, anybody in here can get it if they try something" or was it kind of a subtle hint that the bank manager guy was in on the whole thing and played his part well? I am obviously looking way too deep into this but I was always curious why McCauley said that. I hope you see this by chance and may have an idea! Hope everything is going well for you in beautiful LA!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-70919114585631396782022-06-29T11:10:54.947-04:002022-06-29T11:10:54.947-04:00Damn I can't find his name either, but it does...Damn I can't find his name either, but it doesn't look like it's Piper. I recently re - watched “Risky Business”, Tom Cruise early movie. Then I just watch “Heat” and a lot of things on it remind me of Cruise’s movie. I know they are different genres, etc, but Risky Business also broke some cliches about teen movies. The use of Tangerine Dream soundtrack, the train scenes, the particular lights on the tracks use in the movies. Heat has some music similar, the initial train scene, the airport lights at the end and so on. I do think ...Was thinking about doing Boogie next!

I do think Heat is an epic crime masterpierce. The main reason is because it doesn't spell things about for the viewer, unlike most every other modern crime film. For example, we don't have the slightest clue why the film is including the Dennis Haysbert subplot. That character literally has nothing to do with anything, until he does. That's a rarity in crime films. That's just one small example, but I could talk about this flick for days. No film is for everyone, and I of course respect your opinion as well. But man, this one does it for me.Alex Withrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15887018476048271594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-91563134763162919682015-04-25T15:23:29.190-04:002015-04-25T15:23:29.190-04:00Another great post, but Ive NEVER really seen what...Another great post, but Ive NEVER really seen what makes this film so special to sooo many. Its good, but I feel it just lacks everything other crime films, and indeed other contemporary crime films of its time had to make them stand out and be remembered. People say this is a masterpiece- I know you agree and I respect your opinion dude- so any short way of saying why?

Really looking forward to more of these BTW, if the pattern holds Id love to see your work on PTA continue and Boogie Nights get a little list :DAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11030912841667705866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784665635104956142.post-49133614482548622013-10-29T19:55:32.328-04:002013-10-29T19:55:32.328-04:00Great stuff man. #2 is so true, and 6 is just spot...Great stuff man. #2 is so true, and 6 is just spot on. It is a remake of a T.V movie by Mann, almost like admitting that yeah the first effort wasn't really all that good, but now that I have more resources and talent, game on.
2). De Niro and Pacino could've flipped a coin to determine who would be who.
3). Even though Mann isn't really saying anything new about how crime and law enforcement are a hair's length away from each other, he is just perfecting that statement in every sec of Heat.
4). How Affleck channeled (or you could say ripped off) the shoot-out scene in the climax for 'The Town', I don't blame him if your movie reminds me of Heat in some way it's good thing.
5). Dante Spinotti photographing LA
6). Given a few hair differences in the course of their lives McCauley and Hanna would've been the livelong friends, instead of friends for just a few moments in the end. Which I suppose is the point of the whole story...
Great scenes, great characters, great score, the best remake of all-time. Very few other films incapsulate their directors more than Heat with Mann.
