James Bond by the Numbers

Us Americans are a little slow on the go sometimes. Many of my digital friends who reside overseas have already been privy to the presumed wonderment of the latest James Bond flick, Skyfall. So, while I wait a few more long hours before marveling at the baddassery of 007, here’s a list I cooked up that breaks the world’s greatest spy down statistically. These figures are from Dr. No through Quantum of Solace, and exclude the in-no-way-affiliated-with-the-franchise Never Say Never Again.

23: Number of times “Bond. James Bond.” has been said

6: Years marking the biggest gap between Bond films (1989’s License to Kill – 1995’s GoldenEye)

1960s: Bond’s most prolific decade, with 6 released films

$978.5: Millions Thunderball made at the box office (if adjusted for inflation), making it the most successful Bond film of all time

$271.5: Millions Licence to Kill made at the box office (if adjusted for inflation), making it the least successful Bond film of all time

98%: Rotten Tomatoes rating for Dr. No, marking the highest rating for any Bond film

51%: Rotten Tomatoes rating for The World is Not Enough, marking the lowest rating for any Bond film

83: Number of official Bond Girls

1: Number of official Bond Girls with the first name Pussy

52: Number of women Bond has slept with

8: Number of Oscars the Bond franchise has been nominated for

2: Number of Oscars the Bond franchise has won

6: Number of Razzies the Bond franchise has been nominated for

2: Number of Razzies the Bond franchise has won

3: Number of actresses who have portrayed Moneypenny

0: Number of times James Bond has had sex with any of them

1: Number of times James Bond has had sex in a gypsy caravan

0: Number of times James Bond has had sex on a plane

5: Number of Bond films John Glen directed, the most for any one person

1-2: Number of John Glen-directed Bond films that are any good

30: Age of the youngest Bond, George Lazenby, when he filmed On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

57: Age of the oldest Bond, Roger Moore, when he filmed A View to a Kill

$16.5: Millions that went to Pierce Brosnan for Die Another Day, making him the highest paid Bond

7: Number of times Roger Moore played Bond, making him the most prolific 007

19: Number of conquests Roger Moore laid as Bond, making him the friskiest Bond ever

10: Number of consumed martinis by Daniel Craig, the thirstiest Bond yet

76: Number of people Pierce Brosnan killed, which places him as the deadliest Bond of the franchise

2-3: Number of times I anticipate I’ll see Skyfall in the theater

  1. Great group of facts. I think Eric Snider may have beat you to it -- http://www.movies.com/movie-news/james-bond-statistics/10208

    1. Thanks. Nice list there, glad we didn't have the same ish.

  2. Love this. All of it. Some day, when I have broken free of these academic shackles, I will watch all of these films.
And seriously, Brosnan is the deadliest?
    Pussy Galore- what is that?

    1. Glad you dig it! Watching all of them can be (at times) a real chore. Some are just bad bad bad. I couldn't believe Brosnan was the deadliest, and Craig was the heaviest drinker. Love it.

Pussy Galore is such a classic name, made infinitely better by Sean Connery's accent. "Puusshie."

  3. This is brilliant! Haven't seen Thunderball yet, but that's insane! I'll get to it this weekend though. Have a handful of Bond DVDs to watch, then I've seen them all. :)

The World is Not Enough would actually make my top 5 Bond list. Surprised Die Another Day had a better RT score than it.

    1. Thanks! Thunderball is legit. Good Connery work there, no doubt. The World is Not Enough....(sigh), I dunno. I like what Brosnan did with the character, but other than GoldenEye, his flicks don't really do it for me. Still, they're no where near as pointless as, say, Moonraker. Classically awful.

    2. Moonraker. Ouch. Hate that one. Also, I dig Carlyle's work in TWINE. Minority opinion though...

    3. Hey, at least the Brosnan ones are entertaining. Some of the others are just plain awful.

  4. So, Bond Franchise has more Razzies than Oscars ?? I am almost certain that all the Oscar nominations must be in technical categories and a bunch of Razzies from the Brosnon films, Right ? They were just bad, except Golden Eye maybe.

    1. Ha, yuuuup.

Actually, most of the Oscar noms are for the Best Original Song category, and then some tech ones. Most of the Razzies are for the Brosnan flicks, yeah. Some rough stuff there.

  5. Wow... that's a lot of numbers. I bet those Razzies went to either Madonna or Denise Richards. Or maybe both.

    1. Ha, it is indeed. I certainly hope the Razzies went to them. Yuck.

  6. Great list! Not a Bond guy myself, but this was a good read. Probably in for Skyfall, though I loathed QoS.

Casino Royale was the truth., however.

    1. Thanks! Royale was the truth indeed. Skyfall is a blast. Pleasantly helps you forget Solace, but, for the record, is no where near as good as Royale.

  7. Hey, didn't know you were a something of a Bond fan! Saw all of them as a kid, yes all of them, really was my first foray into film criticism, now that I think about it. Seeing what films in the series really worked for me, those that really didn't, granted it usually it had to do with the lead who was Bond. But I really had to think about how well something was paced and directed, in terms of the action, dialog and acting for the first time. So as you can probably guess I have a lot of fondness for the franchise. Cannot wait to see what Skyfall brings to the table!

    1. Nice! I've seen 'em all too. And like you, I'm a huge fan of the franchise, despite the fact that some of the movies really are not good at all.

Skyfall is a very very worthy addition. It isn't the best, certainly, but it is damn fine.

  8. Weird that Daniel Craig gets paid less than Pierce Brosnan? Probably once Craig makes his fourth, his fee will go up.

    1. Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. I bet Craig will make serious bank on his next one.

  9. "52: Number of women Bond has slept with"

I'm so glad nobody thought of making a movie about many of Bond's illegitimate children.

    1. I dunno... that sounds like the makings of a great tragic comedy. Have all of the little bastards living under one roof. Could be classic.

  10. Oh, you will have fun updating the numbers. ;-)

Last one at 2 for me currently, may still rise.

  11. Heh. Fun list. Love Sati's comment, above, she's so hysterical.

I wonder if the Diamonds are forever haul of Sean Connery would wind up as the top salary if it was adjusted for inflation. :D

As successfull as Skyfall is at the box office (already at 500+ mil) I dont think itll unseat Thunderball as the inflation adjusted king.

    1. Thanks! Sati is so damn priceless, all day every day. Love her writing.

I actually will be really curious to see if Skyfall tops Thunderball.

      Diamonds+Connery = pathetic Bond bliss.
